The Designer of The Virgin Hotel Chicago Shares her Inspiration
February 16 2017
Our brand new wallcovering, Cozy, launches this month, but it’s been years in the making. It all started in 2014, with a custom product we created in collaboration with The Rockwell Group for the comfy-chic guest rooms of the first-ever Virgin Hotel, built right here in Chicago.
We loved the result so much, we decided to create an entire collection around it, and spent the last two years getting the patterns and colors just right. In honor of the launch of Cozy, we’re chatting with Eva Longoria, The Virgin Hotel’s lead designer, about the inspiration for the space, and why the wool wallcovering that inspired "Cozy" was the perfect fit for the hotel.
MR: What was the overall design concept for The Virgin Hotel?
EL: Virgin Hotels Chicago is a comfortable and efficient home away from home with a simple and modern feel. The design is contemporary, sophisticated and elegant, yet understated and playful. The project was about creating a down-to-earth, flexible, and playful environment that allows Virgin’s guests to settle right in and be at ease.
What inspired it?
We were inspired by the playfulness of the Virgin brand and its sense of humor. The hotel is also housed in the Old Dearborn Bank building, an Art Deco landmark designed by C.W. and George L. Rapp Architects in 1928. So, we restored significant historical and architectural features to add warmth and character, while contemporary design details underscore the vibrant DNA of the Virgin brand.
What three words would you use to describe the hotel's guest rooms?
Warm, residential and versatile.
Why did you want to go with a wool wallcovering for the rooms?
The wool felt wraps a room in a comforting feel. It adds a sense of warmth to the Sleeping Lounge that creates a more residential atmosphere.
Why was the "Cozy" collection a perfect solution for the space?
The interior of Virgin Hotel Chicago is characterized by a relaxed “in-your-own-living-room” ambiance, a contemporary and cozy style, and a sense of whimsy. The custom stitching in the brand’s signature red creates a playful counterpoint to the gray felt.
